Workforce Employer Outreach Committee Employer Forum Minutes
(March 11,
2008) The WEOC meeting was held on
March 11 at the Tennessee Technology Center.
The meeting was opened by Dan Nelson, State
of Tennessee, Department of Labor and
Workforce Development, who introduced
Lafayette McKinney, director of the Local
Workforce Investment Act, Area 11.
McKinney discussed Incumbent Worker
Training, which helps businesses remain
competitve by training existing workforces.
The program offers up to a $50,000 grant,
which is matched in kind by the employer. On
the job training was also discussed, which
offers one half salary re-imbursement for
employers who hire new workers.
The Career Readiness Certificates were then
explained, which are the result of a
multi-state consortium to create a portable
skills credential based on a common language
for ascertaining applied math, location of
information and reading for information. The
computer-based test, developed by ACT, is
multiple choice and will result in a bronze,
silver or gold certificate.
Career Readiness Certificates offer benefits
to business, individuals, economic
development, education, workforce
development and training organizations to
address the changes in workforce development
needs which have occurred in the past 50
years. The certificates are designed to help
employers save training costs and reduce
turnover. The CRC are EEOC compliant and
legally defensible.
